Sugar Pine Slabs

Sugar Pine is native to the hills of the far west from the Cascades of central Oregon to the south and north of Baja California, Mexico. Did you know that they are most abundant in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Central California?

This tree is known to be the biggest pine in the world. In fact, it grows at least 200 feet in height. It has trunk diameters of at least seven feet. On top of that, the sugar pine generates the biggest cone of any pine. The cones can grow twenty-four (24) inches in length. Normally, they are twelve to eighteen inches in length.

This tree derives its name from the crystal-like coatings of resin, which build from around the corners of fire scars to a living tree. The fluid exudation from a wound to the living sugar pine solidifies into white nodules, which settlers and Indians learned to chomp like gum.

What’s more, the young sugar pine trees are narrow. They have open pyramids with extending pendulous branches. The needles are at least three to five inches and have a dark bluish-green color.

At Go Living Edge, we have a wide array of Sugar Pine slabs. So feel free to stop by and check them out today! We can custom cut slabs; however, these will have extended drying periods. What’s more, our slabs are locally and ethically sourced, and are either repurposed or recycled.
